I read an interview with Mr Aldiss in the 80s where he said this series was inspired by the English tradition of Shakespeare, Hardy and Stapledon where big pictures overlay small, tragic stories. Finding it quite spellbinding, a myriad of characters and species, and in this one in particular an hellkconia around the planet’s varied and majestic landscape and ecology. Were the lives of the kings and queens the only focal points, some would say that the book is mere alternate universe fantasy. In a strange way, it feels like the equally well-written Helliconia Spring was but the Prolog to Helliconia Summer, a well-crafted, huge-canvass story of politics, warfare, and religion on this now well-established earth-like planet some one thousand light years from the one we call home. The Batalix-Freyr system is supposedly in the constellation of Ophiuchusabout a thousand light years from Earth.
The virus, while essential for human survival on Helliconia, is fatal year-round to the Earth-humans aboard Avernuswho have no natural defences against it.
